CEDC Continues Work Towards Merger with County

February 21st, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation is continuing to work toward a merger with Allegany County to oversee all economic development related matters for the city and county- and while there will be some changes, no jobs will be lost.  While it will be a relatively seamless transition, there will be some noticeable differences resulting, beginning with a name change from the CEDC to the Allegany Development Corporation.  The ADC will report to a seven-person board with four members from the private sector, two county commissioners and the mayor of Cumberland.  As is the case with any merger or consolidation of services, there is a level of concern being expressed by some staff members as to how their jobs may be impacted.  Executive Director Paul Kelly emphasized that there is no planned downsizing of employees…

Some organizational information here but there is no mention of the $1.4 Million that CEDC was demanding.
Why that amount? To be used for what purpose? And by whom?

If there is no reduction of employment where is the cost savings? Only in wasteful government would this happen.

That’s what the employees always hear but in many cases it’s just a ruse to keep individuals from looking elsewhere for future employment prior to having the ax fall on their heads.
When they say it’s not planned isn’t the same as saying it won’t happen. All they need do is plan it in one week or one month.
Mergers mean redundancies and I would rather have somewhere to go rather than find out too late. Look out for your future no one else is.

WOW, if it is taking this long to agree on how they can work together, and who gets the shinny
corner office, what chance do they have that they will actually accomplish anything.

A “merger” that eliminates zero positions and increases costs… Only in government.

Maybe they should merge with Berkeley County West Virginia’s Economic Development. They keep getting Factory after Factory after Factory to locate there. I know it couldn’t be That the state of Maryland is trying to stop them from building factories there. So, why would they build them here?

What a HUGE mistake this is. This may be the last hooray for the Area. How can this be allowed? Time to elect new folks in the County and the City!
