Concerned citizens seeking the replacement or reopening of the Washington Street Bridge will hold a press conference this morning in the 300 block near the bridge site. The event is being held to call attention to the absence of progress to replace the bridge which has not been fully open since 2012. The group is calling on city, county, state and federal officials to work together to solve the issue- and is also proposing that alternate modular bridge technology be considered as a solution. The event is being held on the third anniversary of the bridge being struck by a CSX train. Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss says although the progress on the Washington Street structure is not as advanced as the other West Side bridge projects- negotiations between the City and CSX are ongoing…

That was five years after the bridge closed due to decades of the city’s failure to enforce posted weight restrictions on all the bridges. The city allows massive trucks with 53 foot trailers to roam about residential streets ruining the roads and bridges and breaking limbs off of trees. When they come across an offender, they do nothing to them. It has been many months since some dozy truck driver destroyed the traffic lights at Mechanic and Harrison Streets and there is still a temporary, portable light poorly controlling the intersection. The city lacks the money to properly replace the lights and is too lame to pursue the driver, truck owner and their insurance company for the damages. Just another bit knocked off of Crumbleland.

Why arent they all bellyaching to their Mayor who promised when he got elected that he would fix the bridges? He said he would pull strings inside CSX because he was an insider and knew how business works. He said he had all of the answers about the bridges and patted himself on the back for opening one lane of one bridge after it was steadied up with a few toothpicks underneath. Or is there any chance that CSX wanted him to be Mayor to have an inside chance at killing any responsibility that they have to the bridges? Somebody should corner Ray and start asking questions!
