City and County teaming up on road projects next month

August 15th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

In cooperation with the Allegany County Department of Public Works, the City of Cumberland will chip and seal several City streets beginning in September.  In June, Paul Kahl, Director of Public Works for Allegany County, contacted the City of Cumberland to offer the County's services for the program.

"We have quite a few streets with low volume traffic that are ideal for the chip and seal application and we appreciate the County's offer to provide the service" said City Administrator Jeff Rhodes.  "The County is very good at this and we are interested in seeing if this can provide a lower cost method of improving certain streets that might otherwise rank low in our Pavement Management System, simply due to low traffic volumes" added Rhodes.

The first streets to receive attention will be located in the Sperry Terrace area near the County office building.  The partnership will see the equipment and manpower being provided by Allegany County while the City of Cumberland will provide the materials for each job.

Since we just spent $20,000 on improving Abrams field, how about that access road, Rosewood & Forester to Frederick St. What good is a great ball field if you can’t safely get to it ?

I thought the city just got its finances fixed and now here we are going back to the old practices of just borrowing more money and digging a bigger hole. Expect taxes to go up again! Why pave the small off streets when the major streets need more work? Talk about poor leadership! Live within our means and stop wasting money.
