In an effort to create a more positive atmosphere for bicyclists, Cumberland’s Downtown Development Commission voted Thursday to eliminate the current “dismount zones” and to allow bikes to be ridden on the mall at a reasonable, safe speed. The current rule has required those riding bikes to either park them at either end of the mall, or to push them as they travel through. Well, there goes the pedestrian mall. It is sort of refreshing that DDC finally admits that there is nothing worth stopping for on Baltimore St. and works to get folks through it as quickly as possible.

Dismounts still be done! My wife works locally on the mall and has almost been hit by a bikers (local) bikers, another coming out of an alley almost struck her in her car. So like anything else the few misfits that are on the mall set the patterns or rules for these kind of things. If they do this it should be lined and signed well and on one side or the other. That would help control the problems.

Nobody stops at the dismount signs. Local or visiting bikers. I have only seen a few stop dismount and walk their bikes through. I like to walk on the mall not dodge bikes and skate boarders.
