In an effort to see the George Street parking garage better utilized- and to address some overall parking concerns in the downtown area- the Cumberland Mayor and City Council will consider implementing a plan to enhance parking opportunities. The proposal was presented during Tuesday’s work session by City Administrator Jeff Rhodes. The highlights include re-doing the fee structure at the garage; improving access and exiting to halt revenue losses; and making some lots currently permitted to allow for free parking. According to the latest data, in all there are 1,631 parking spaces in Downtown Cumberland- including 465 in the Rose’s Plaza. Mayor Ray Morriss…

It would be nice if Cumberland offered free parking everywhere downtown between Thanksgiving and Christmas like Frostburg and Keyser do.

The last Mayor Grim did this and parking was always free downtown during the Christmas season. I guess the new Mayor didn’t follow that anymore.

There are not many reasons to shop downtown these days. Overall, despite the parking garages in a county were 1 in 5 is legally disabled real close access is critical. The biggest problem is the one Cioni noted – ‘the parking spots are just not where people want them.’ Duh. Paid parking in this area is an issue. That is the sad reality.
