Commissioners Asked To Save Entrance Facade To Former Allegany High School

November 25th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Local historian Al Feldstein approached the Allegany County Commissioners Thursday requesting the county save the entrance façade to the former Allegany High School. The building, on Sedgwick Street, is nearly 100 years old and was closed in 2018.  It has been targeted for demolition with the county hoping to see the land used for new home development. Feldstein said it is a piece of history and reflects a quality of craftsmanship rarely displayed these days…

We knew the day was coming when the building would be demolished. It has been talked about for years. NOW we want to save parts of it? NOW? No wonder nothing gets done. I’m surprised we don’t save the falling bridges for posterity. If we tell the CHCO that a slave owning Confederate quarried the stones I’m sure they would jump on it.

Maybe if there had been more thought during the “rip it down” phase in the late 60;’s early 70′s we would still have the beautiful Queen City Station/Hotel instead of that ugly monstrosity of a Post Office.
