Cumberland Man Arrested On Assault/Home Invasion Charges

On Monday, 10/21/2019, at 4:53 PM, the Cumberland Police responded to a reported assault which occurred at a private residence in the 300 block of Springdale Street in Cumberland. The first arriving officers found the 50 year old male resident/victim suffering from severe head injuries, believed to have been caused by blows from an unknown object.  The Cumberland Fire Department ambulance also responded to the scene and transported the victim to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center emergency room for further treatment of serious, life threatening injuries.

            Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) also responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.

            Through numerous interviews, as well as the review of cell phone records and video surveillance, Investigators were able to identify a suspect, 36 year old Johnny Lee Schriner, Jr., of Cumberland. All local law enforcement was notified and officers began searching for Schriner. While the search was being conducted, Schriner turned himself in at the Cumberland Police Department.

            The crime scene was processed by crime scene technicians with the Maryland State Police Science Forensic Sciences Division, and numerous items of evidence were collected. Additional items of evidence were collected from Schriner at the time of his arrest.

            Schriner has been charged with Home Invasion, 1st Degree Assault, and 2nd Degree Assault. He is currently awaiting an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner.

            The investigation is continuing by the Cumberland Police and C3I.
