DDC Committee Evaluating Mall Management Candidates

July 10th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

A total of 34 candidates have applied to be considered as the next mall manager for Downtown Cumberland. A Downtown Development Commission appointed committee is currently attempting to establish a list of top contenders for consideration. After being held for many years by Ed Mullaney, the position has been somewhat in a state of flux in recent years with a number of individuals serving short stints in the position- the last being Mikayla Dodge who resigned at the end of December. With the mall about to undergo a major renovation- the scope of the job will be expanded dramatically with the top priority centered on the mall redesign and it’s impact on property and business owners. Crisis management and preparation for the mall relaunch; updating data collection operations; and strengthening working relationships with Cumberland and Frostburg; the CEDC; Allegany County Tourism and Canal Place will all now be part of the mall manager responsibilities. DDC member Doug Schwab said the committee has developed a scoring formula to rate the candidates…

Trump scored a 2 and he only went that high due to his social media experience. For all other criteria he was in negative numbers.
The man is just not qualified to hold such a responsible position.

Does anyone think the mall renovation is actually going to happen? And if it does, does anyone think it will actually make a difference downtown? Other than the upgrades to the underground infrastructure.

I thought he got a 2 on his SATs. That is, before he paid his buddy to take it for him.

Are things really that bad in this town that 34 people would sign up for a job that doesn’t have a set job description, salary, or reporting supervisor? Last talks between the DDC, City, and CEDC sounded like a family fighting over grandma’s cookbook after a funeral.. everyone wanted it and had ‘the best ideas for it’ but no one wanted to pay for it.

      > Hey, as you describe it, it is a great job. No boss, no specific duties and a great chance to get one’s snout into the local government trough. The salary was discussed in interviews on the radio. It was said that the DDC would pay $70k and hoped the city would kick in some more if it was required to get a good person! Plus great benefits! Sounds like a clever person could make it a $75 per hour part time gig.

DDC said they have 40k from the mall tax (which the CEDC wants to eliminate) and was looking at the city for the rest of the 30k and at last comment the Mayor and Councilwoman Marchini were commenting saying that the city budget is tight as it is without the addition of funding half this position.

I for one don’t think opening baltimore street to traffic is going to help downtown.how about just leaving it as is and not spending tax money we don’t have.
