Eastern Maryland State Prison Busts Alleged Smuggler

July 29th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Eastern Correctional Institution correctional officers recovered over $35,000 worth of the narcotic suboxone from a woman arrested for attempting to smuggle it into the prison.

Tania Ramirez of Riverdale, MD was released on her own recognizance on Sunday, July 29, 2019, after being charged with possession with intent to deliver drugs into a state correctional facility.

Ramirez stands accused of tossing two blue packages containing 353 of the orange colored strips of suboxone.

A visiting room officer said he spotted Ramirez toss the containers over the visiting room wall in the western compound of the state’s largest prison. He retrieved the material and contacted the department’s drug sniffing K-9 unit who alerted on the packages, indicating the drugs.

Though the thin film drug sells for about $3 when prescribed by a doctor, department officials say inmates can gain about $1,000 a strip selling it illegally to inmates in the facilities.

The major bust is the latest by department officers. Last month, a Baltimore attorney was charged with sneaking the drug into one of his clients at the Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown. That same month, a Western Correctional Institution officer in Cumberland, MD, retrieved a package of the narcotic stashed near an inmate road crew.

Secretary Robert L. Green praised the ECI officers for their alertness in spotting the attempt.

“Illegal drugs fuel prison violence and our alert officers may have saved lives through this major interdiction,” Green said. “Our dedicated officers will continue to be vigilant against any attempt to bring contraband into our facilities.”

Charges against the inmate, who is serving 20 years for second-degree murder, are pending.
