Edwards Comments on Kirwan Bill Approval

March 19th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland General Assembly gave final approval before the close of session  to a far-reaching measure aimed at improving K-12 education throughout the state as recommended by the Kirwan Commission. The House of Delegates voted 96-38, sending the legislation to Gov. Larry Hogan, who has vowed to oppose tax increases to pay for the plan projected to cost billions of dollars over the next decade. The Senate approved the bill earlier. The plan focuses on five policy areas for K-12. They include expanding early childhood education such as pre-K and increasing teacher salaries. The policy areas also include college and career readiness, aid for struggling schools and accountability in implementation. The measure would phase in the recommendations over 10 years and cost billions of dollars. State Senator George Edwards said he ultimately supported the bill- but only after receiving assurances that it won’t be paid for by way of major tax hikes…

George, you received assurances it won’t be paid via a major tax hike….but were you told where the money would come from? If you guys have seeds to money trees, please share!
Of course there will be major tax hikes. You’re going to tax our streaming services now and who knows what else, but there will surely be more taxing.
This, sir, was the last straw for me. I’ll be moving out of this state, as will others. Good luck with your money grab.

It’s about time someone runs against Edwards. Horrible vote. The democrats are going to tax everything possible to pay for this thing which they can now claim to be “bipartisan”. And passing it this week under quarantine a joke.

Agreed Welchy. Any legislator who votes this way needs to be removed.

Our public school system lags behind most other developed nations on the planet. I’m not necessarily in favor of always throwing money at the problem but if changes aren’t made you will generally get the same results. You can’t argue with the goals laid out by the commission.
