Footer Dye Works Added to Registry

March 13th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council by a 3-0 vote with two members abstaining approved supporting the application of the Footer Dye Works building to the National Registry of Historic Places. There has been an ongoing debate in the community, complete with a petition now circulating, regarding the future of the building- with some wanting to see it developed by the private sector- and other wanting it demolished. Placing the building on the registry almost assures that it will not be torn down. One of those most strongly opposed to ongoing efforts to salvage the building with state or local dollars is Dr Sean McCagh who suggested that the overwhelming majority of city residents want the building destroyed- and they will hold those on the council accountable for their votes on this issue.

My vote is for Dr Sean McCagh. This vote isn’t really a big surprise. I still believe that our money could be used in a better way. So I am hoping a private company comes and develops the building into something worthwhile that brings good to all of Cumberland.

This vote may very well be the impedus to vote Kauffman, Caporale, and Scarpelli out of office when they run again. They own this debacle now and they need to articulate reasons why they are so eager to waste taxpayer dollars by supporting the ongoing “preservation” of this obstacle to development. Shame on Kauffman, Caporale and Scarpelli for ignoring public opinion!

It is not too late to tell our state officials, including the Governor that the city officials who voted in favor of this designation do NOT speak for the people of Cumberland. The petition to local and state officials continues online at https://www.change.org/petitions/mayor-city-council-of-cumberland-and-canal-place-authority-tear-down-the-footer-dye-works-building

Dave Caporale just told a major UNTRUTH on WCBC. He stated that placing the Footer Dye Works on the National Historic Register does not impact the ability to demolish the building. That is NOT true! Even City Attorney Mike Cohen stated two weeks ago in public that the city’s own historic preservation standards include that National Historic Registration is a determinant in allowing for property demolition.

Either Dave Caporale is misleading the public or he does NOT pay attention.

WCBC needs to get a transcript of that meeting two weeks ago and clarify that Dave Caporale either is misleading or misspeaking.
