Former House Speaker backs Walker in 1B Race

October 25th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Cas Taylor, Western Maryland's highly respected former State Delegate and esteemed Speaker of the Maryland State House, today endorsed Penny Walker, Democratic candidate for Delegate, District 1B. Taylor represented Western Maryland from 1975 until 2003. Elected Speaker of the House in 1994, he was one of the longest-serving speakers in Maryland history.  His unparalleled record of achievement was acknowledged statewide in 2007 when the new House of Delegates Office Building was named in his honor.

An effective bipartisan leader, Taylor was instrumental in enhancing state investment in Western Maryland, including such projects as the Rocky Gap Golf Course and Resort, the Mountain Thunder Steam Train and Canal place project.  He shepherded the bi-state compact that became federal law establishing the Potomac Highlands Airport Authority and was the moving force in relocating the Redskins Training Camp to Frostburg.  His signature legislation, "One Maryland" continues to serve as a significant tool facilitating private investment in economically depressed regions of Maryland and is vitally important to us here and across Maryland. Born and raised in Allegany County, Cas and his wife Polly live in Cumberland, and he continues to work as a valued consultant on state government affairs.

Speaker Taylor praised Walker’s ability to reach out to both political parties, stating, “I am very pleased to endorse Penny Walker in her race to serve Western Maryland as the delegate for district 1B. Penny is by far the best candidate to represent all the citizens of Allegany County, and will work in support of both Democrats and Republicans, placing the needs of Western Maryland first in all she does.  She knows the challenges and she has the energy and positive attitude needed to get bipartisan support for solutions that work. Through her work as a paralegal with Cumberland's nonprofit law firm, Penny has helped hundreds of Allegany County residents resolve critical problems in housing, employment, income, and education. As the founder and owner of a successful local business, Penny knows firsthand what it’s like to work 24/7 to make a living, and she will use her signature drive and enthusiasm to make Western Maryland's needs a priority in Annapolis again. Vote for Penny Walker. Talk to your friends and neighbors in District 1b and encourage them to do the same. It's Important.”
