December 17th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

On Monday at 1:43 PM, the Cumberland Police responded to the Dollar General on Industrial Boulevard for a reported fraud. Initial responding Officers learned that a male suspect was in the store attempting to return items for cash, utilizing forged receipts. Officers further learned that a female suspect who had accompanied the male suspect had fled the scene in a small silver colored SUV. The male suspect was detained at that time.

Officers spoke with a Dollar General District Manager who was on scene and learned that the suspects were believed to have been involved in numerous fraudulent returns all over the east coast and Midwest at other Dollar General stores. They had been to several Dollar Generals in the Cumberland area in just the past two days making fraudulent returns.

Assistance was requested from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) and C3I Investigators responded to assist in the investigation.

Investigators learned that the suspects had made returns at the Corriganville and LaVale stores on Sunday, 12/15/2019, and the Nave's Crossroads and Industrial Boulevard stores on Monday. In each instance the suspects returned items believed to have been stolen from other Dollar Generals for cash. The suspects utilized forged receipts in each instance.

A description of the suspect vehicle was obtained. A search for the vehicle was conducted in the area by local law enforcement. An Allegany County Sheriff's Deputy located the vehicle in the parking lot of a local hotel. The vehicle was seized at that time.

Investigators learned the room number where the suspects were staying. Search warrants for the room and the vehicle were obtained by Investigators. Searches of the room and the vehicle led to the recovery of numerous items of evidence, including stolen items, forged receipts, rolls of receipt paper, and the copier believed utilized by the suspects to print the receipts.

The suspects, 42 year old Christopher Lee Clark, of Willisburg, Kentucky, and 40 year old Ashley Brooke Bronnbauer, of Bardstown, Kentucky were arrested and charged with several counts of Forgery, Passing a Forged Document, and Theft. Clark is being held on $5000.00 bond, and Bronnbauer is being held on $10,000.00 bond at the Allegany County Detention Center, pending their next court appearances.

The Maryland State Police also assisted in the investigation. The investigation is continuing by the Cumberland Police and C3I.
