Kirwan Commission Recommendations Receives Formal Hearing

February 18th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Legislation to implement the recommendations of the Kirwan Commission received a formal hearing Monday. Four committees held  a joint hearing on bills introduced in the House and Senate that will implement reforms such as expanded preschool, curriculum changes and pay raises for teachers over 10 years.  The committees heard testimony from teacher unions and other education reform advocates who support the bill, as well as from opponents.  The independent panel, led by former University of Maryland System Chancellor William “Britt” Kirwan, recommends, among other things, pay raises for teachers, expanded preschool and various curriculum changes. The bill does not include a method of paying for the annual $4.4 billion in education reforms. Some lawmakers are considering using revenue from legalized sports betting; and from legalizing recreational marijuana to help pay the cost. Delegate Jason Buckel, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, said that those revenue streams wouldn't come close to cover the cost of implementing the Kirwin recommendations…

How do we differentiate between lawmakers and mafia dons when they have the same desire to bring in money from gambling or drugs?
Of course we all know the difference, the mafia dons don’t get to tell the rest of us that these vices are now legal, the lawmakers can.

The driving force behind the legalization of pot is the tax revenue created for the state and federal governments.

Why is it whenever McKay speaks to the voters it always sounds like he’s talking down to us?

His tone always makes me wonder if he doesn’t think our feeble mountain brains can’t handle the ‘Big City’ Annapolis talk. Talk to us like we are your employer Mike not one of your dozen children.
