The Luke mill is set to formally shut down at the end of this week- bringing an end to the 130-year-old papermaking manufacturing plant that at one time employed 2,000 people. In April, Verso announced plans to close the Luke mill and operation at the plant ended at the end of May- displacing nearly 700 workers. Assistance for those workers as well as possible future uses for the mill site were topics discussed last week when Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss and Allegany County Commissioner Jake Shade headed a local delegation meeting with Governor Larry Hogan. Since the mill closure announcement, there has been no shortage of support for the region expressed by state and federal representatives. Here’s a novel idea.
States are starting to ban throwaway plastic bags and it may be time to return to the paper grocery bag.
The former Verso plant made paper so there should be some way to convert to production of brown paper bags.
I’m sure that would be a simpler process than making coated paper.
Just an idea.
