Majority of local residents oppose reopening schools

July 28th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Should Allegany County students return to the classroom next month?

WCBC's Alex McDonald conducted an unscientific survey over the weekend, asking 66 passersby the yes or no question.

74% answered in the negative, while 26% answered yes.

McDonald describes the methodology for the poll…

Over 20 countries in Europe have opened schools with no spike of cases. School age children are not the ones that are hard hit. More school age children have died of the flu than coronavirus. I understand the concern but look at the medical facts. This country was built on people who faced adversity but pushed on anyway. The children need to be back in school!

      > First, kids can still spread it. Second, Europe does quick & mass testing AND tracing, unlike the USA. They are a modern society, we’re a 3rd world sh-thole as some guy says.

My guess is that you have never been to a third world country DPM. I have, and trust me, you wouldn’t like it there. For one, the crap your spouting against our government would get you killed in some of them. If you don’t like it here get the hell out. I’ll pay for the trip and personally escort you. Please take MAC and Jay with you.

There are children getting and dying from this in some areas of the US. The big concern should be FSU & AC coming back but does that matter with the Casino open? Hope I am wrong… I believe this area is in store for trouble.

Our numbers are climbing, talk to those in the medical field before making any rash decisions

That was probably a hand picked survey. Tge kids need to be in school for a variety of reasons, the most important one being socializing with friends. Also distant learning is terrible for most students.

Most important reason to be in school is for social reasons? Good grief Steve, there has never been a more social or connection generation than the young people of today. They are addicted to their phones, Facebook, and Instagram. Their whole life practically revolves around their phones. I don’t think they’ll be socially retarded. And while it is true that school aged children are not hard hit, they are not the only ones returning to school. Many, many teachers, administrators, custodians, and bus drivers are in their 50s and 60s. Are the buildings being prepared for some sort of re-opening? Plexiglass, hand sanitizing stations, signage, social distancing measures, smaller class sizes, bathroom and food service protocols? It’s awfully cavalier to say the country was built by people who faced adversity and pushed through anyway. What if one – just one – teacher or student dies because of the re-opening?

You call it cavalier but it is the truth. In the migration west the cowards didn’t go and the weak didn’t last. Now we want “safe rooms” because somebody said something that hurt their little feelings. What if someone falls down the steps, are we going to restrict the school to the 1st floor? Live has dangers, people will get sick, get hurt and some will die, in fact we all will die. We make it as safe as possible and live our lives. If you are going to shut down the country because someone might die, and huddle in your house in fear, you might as well be dead.

Let’s send them back to the classroom. What’s the worst that could happen?

How can you say “majority of local residents” when you only asked 66 people.

Weird, there has been NOT A SINGLE CASE of Covid being transferred from a student to a teacher in the WORLD! Not one. In fact, doctors say it can’t happen. Children don’t transfer the virus, yet Jay and Mac won’t tell you those facts because they are sheep and fearmongers.

I am sure this is fake. The only ones for this not to reopen are in drugs. Did Alex find some heavy drinkers and gave them some vodka while he conducted his poll.
