Maryland Department Of Labor Launches New Unemployment Insurance Website

April 24th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

In an effort to reduce wait times and frustration, Maryland Department of Labor officials announced the launch of a new unemployment insurance claims website that went active Friday morning.  WBAL reports all Marylanders are now able to file their unemployment insurance claims entirely online through the state department of labor's website.

The new system works as a "one stop shop" for residents to file all types of claims to free up phone lines and prevent long wait times, officials said.

Previously, federal government employees, military, those who worked out of state or held more than three jobs in the past 18 months were required to file claims by phone. Now, those residents are allowed file entirely online, officials said.

Those who are who are independent contractors, have insufficient work history, are self-employed, sole proprietors or gig economy workers, or are eligible for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance are also able to submit claims online.

Labor officials said if a resident is not eligible for regular unemployment benefits and currently unable to work due to the coronavirus crisis, then they may apply for a maximum of 39 weeks of benefits for the dates Jan. 27, 2020, through Dec. 31, 2020.

Under the CARES Act and the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, people filing initial claims and those currently receiving benefits will automatically be provided an additional 13 weeks of benefits, according to labor officials.

Since March 14, over 300,000 Maryland residents have filed initial unemployment insurance claims, according to reports.

Hopefully Maryland will do a better job with the Unemployment website than they did with the Maryland Health Connection ( started for sign up to the ACA ). That was a complete joke. It took days and days to get through and, hopefully, get logged on and signed up.
My heartfelt sympathies to everyone hoping to claim their benefits.
