October 26th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

Dr. Janet Mattern, an associate professor in the Frostburg State University Department of Educational Professions, has been selected as the ninth recipient of the President’s Distinguished Faculty Award.

This award recognizes a faculty member who has provided exceptional service to the University and has advanced its mission, goals and strategic planning initiatives.

“Janet has not only excelled as a teacher and advisor but has also contributed significantly in service to the Educational Professions program and the University,” said FSU President Ronald Nowaczyk. “She was instrumental to the success of maintaining accreditation and to the Teacher Quality Partnership Grant. This award recognizes her collegiality and commitment to the success of her colleagues and students.”

Mattern is highly valued and respected in her instructional role in early childhood education, enriching her teaching with extensive real-world experience.

Adapting to challenges posted by COVID, she has transitioned the foundation special education course to a blended format, advised a record number of transfer students remotely and kept active FAEYC (Frostburg Association for the Education of Young Children), the student organization she advises.

Mattern is also a key participant in the FSU regional partnership with Coppin State University in the Teacher Quality Partnership Grant, which expands our students’ experience with diverse populations, and coordinator in our accreditation process for the Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation, creating, guiding faculty, organizing and interpreting data analysis, and seeing areas within programs in which continuous improvement is needed.
