MD Senate Committee to Conduct Hearing On Marijuana Legalization

February 20th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

A Maryland Senate Committee will conduct a hearing today on a proposed constitutional amendment to legalize recreational use of marijuana. Takoma Park Delegate David Moon is hoping his third effort to legalize recreational marijuana use and sales in Maryland will work.  The Democrat submitted a bill to the General Assembly earlier this month that, if approved, would set up a statewide referendum so voters can decide whether to allow the nonmedical use and sale of cannabis in the state. The bill was cross filed in the senate. Delegate Mike McKay said he recently conducted a mail survey among 4,000 active voters in the 1C district which includes parts of Allegany and Washington counties and the numbers show  76 percent oppose non-medical use of marijuana, with 20 percent supporting the sale of it for recreational purposes and 4 percent being unsure. However, he said acknowledged those numbers are likely reverse in the Baltimore area. Despite the apparent momentum, both house and senate leaders doubt the bill gains any traction this session. Senator Bob Zirkin chairs the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee that will hear the bill today….
