Morriss Comments on Those Unwilling to Return to Work

June 10th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

As local officials continue efforts to reopen the economy in order to get people back to work-  one roadblock that has developed is an unwillingness on the part of many to return to the job- if it means less money than they are currently receiving from the government.  That was a subject discussed Tuesday afternoon when the Cumberland City Council conducted a work session to receive updates from the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation. Mayor Ray Morriss said he is aware of many instances where people are saying no thanks when they are offered a chance to return to work…

I’m guessing here but maybe part of the unwillingness to return to work just might be fear of catching a potentially lethal virus from practically anybody at anytime.
People do find a job that pays them all that they can get. Right now the best paying job for many is staying alive and healthy.
Once the extra unemployment benefit ends they’ll be back to work.

Saying no thanks when they are offered a chance to return to work should disqualify people from continued unemployment benefits. Employers should notify the unemployment agency of these many instances. Getting people off unemployment sooner will reduce the employer’s future unemployment taxes.

      > That’s what the law says NOW. If you refuse to return you are to be denied any more benefits. Plain & simple as that.

Bob is correct. You should have the right to not return but you will lose your check. Be an adult and learn how to make a choice with consequences instead being handed what you want just because you want it that way.

A virus with a 99.9% recovery rate has lead us to this and all the fear mongering hasn’t helped. The “state” in its bid to “help” has provided those out of work with incentive not to work, much the same as welfare across the board. Enjoy the fruits of your socialism people.

      > The corporate welfare of trillions of dollars doesn’t seem to bother you at all, it is only when workers are helped that the ‘socialism’ whine appears like a cross to a vampire. So much for all life is sacred. Asking people to risk their lives for our pathetic tourist economy is amazing to see.

No Kevin, all welfare bothers me. It rankles me that corporations can receive ANY tax payer dollars, so don’t try to put words in my mouth. The government has no duty to take from those who work and give to those who do not. That is up to the local communities, families and churches that should be dealing with the issuance of welfare and help. And your stupid “So much for all life is sacred” statement is absolutely mind blowing when you fail to take into account the damage done by the welfare state at all levels. Does anyone really believe that the government has any interest in working people? No, of course they don’t. Then why were the people reluctantly ‘given’ extra unemployment monies?
The fear of bad press in the form of deaths as the virus runs its course. Trump is more frightened of bad press than he is of having average individuals die by the thousands.
Covid-19 cases are still increasing in 19 states.
If things are so safe and the virus is under control in Maryland why have testing sites continued to expand? Now they ask anyone and everyone to come in for a test, no need to show any symptoms. This way the testing results will be diluted by testing uninfected individuals. The infection rate will continue to decline, and rapidly at that.
I say take the money and run. The reason you will not return to work is the fear of infection and possible death.

The issue is that the government made a BIG mistake – given extra money to those on unemployment seriously and now they can say NO to returning to work? Take the CHECK away!

Truth is that all the working individuals that is daily exposed to COVID 19 should get the EXTRA money as HAZARD pay

      > That’s actually a good idea. Put everyone back to work and continue to give them the bonus money. The govt. will save money as the infections will continue and the workers will drop like flies thus opening up even more jobs to improve the economy.

      > You may be old enough to remember ‘too big to fail’. Wall St. and the big banks squandered money to the point where 401Ks were decimated. The Fed paid them off with billions more dollars. Not one person served time in prison.
But please don’t give Mom or Pop any money. GM too big to fail, Joe average let him go back to work to support GM.
