While a span has opened on Fayette Street, travel in Cumberland’s west side remains a challenge with bridges on Washington and Cumberland streets remaining closed. The repair work on the Fayette Street bridge is a temporary fix while CSX develops plans for a new span to be constructed in 2021. The Cumberland Street bridge was closed in November 2017 after failing a safety inspection. The Washington Street bridge has been closed the longest. After structural issues were found in 2012, the two-lane bridge was reduced to one lane to reduce weight load. A train strike closed it indefinitely in August 2017, and it was hit again in the 2018 strike that closed the bridge on Fayette. While the COVID-19 pandemic may have knocked the bridges out of the headlines- Mayor Ray Morriss said talks with CSX continue and repairing and replacing both structures remains a city priority…

It is not encouraging to hear that these projects that have floundered for years are actually a top priority of our government implying that this pathetic outcome is the best we can expect for anything.

> I agree, but it’s to be expected when gutless politicians are so focused on kissing Corporate butts. The pols used the excuse they feared CSX would shift jobs away if forced to fix THEIR bridges. So CSX refuses to fix them AND still lays off workers. (as though CSX cares for anybody or anything except Their profit)
