Nearly 71,000 Maryland Unemployment Claims Are Stuck In The System

June 12th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

State labor officials announced Thursday that nearly 71,000 Maryland unemployment insurance claims filed amid the coronavirus pandemic have been blocked from dispersing payments. WBAL reports officials said that 70,804 claims that are “pending adjudication,” according to the Baltimore Sun.
The claims have “one or more issues that are blocking claimants from receiving payment. … We continue to make progress on ensuring every Marylander receives the benefits they are eligible for under federal law,” officials said Thursday.
Fallon Pearre, a spokeswoman for the state department of labor, would not say how long it would take the state to work through the thousands of backlogged claims. She also would not answer questions on how many people are working on the issue.
Pearre said the department sent emails to the nearly 71,000 residents affected by the backlog.
“In order to provide eligible Marylanders with their benefits as soon as possible, these pending claimants’ regular unemployment insurance claims will be denied, so they can apply for and receive benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program,” Pearre said.
By redirecting residents to the PUA program, there will be faster processing times for benefits.
Some of the reasons for the issues include disagreements between the employer and employee on how the job ended, failing to provide sufficient documentation and wage discrepancies, Pearre said.

Just one more example of the good work done by the State of Maryland when they put there minds into a computer website.
Not only do they not know how long it will be to be fixed but they also will not say how many personnel have been assigned to the task. From the tone of that admission I can only imagine that it is very few.

I just read where everything is great with the new BEACON site. That it had some initial flaws, but it’s great now. Apparently not so much. So sorry for the folks who are continuing to suffer.
