Open Containers not allowed during Pub Crawl

March 13th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The city  will not allow open containers downtown for Saturday’s Hooley Pub Crawl in an effort to curtail the size of the event due to coronavirus concerns. The Cumberland Mayor and City Council met in a special session Friday morning and voted to  rescind the ordinance passed last week allowing open containers. Canceling the ordinance will make it illegal to have open beer, or other alcoholic beverages, outside in the downtown on Saturday.  Cumberland city officials said the Hooley will still take place as planned, however, not allowing open containers could dampen the event normally attending by more than 1,000 people annually. While some have questioned why the city would allow the event to go on as planned given the health concerns- Mayor Morriss says those decisions are out of the city’s hands. The Hooley features attendees traveling by foot from tavern-to-tavern and restaurants to enjoy specials and live entertainment.

Making life unpleasant for the population is a longstanding practice of the local government so this dampening is nothing new.

It’s up to the public to show more common sense than City officials by just staying at home and giving the pub crawl a pass.

The city is trying to comply with the ban on gatherings of 250 plus. The Hooley has gatherings on the mall larger than 250 … no brainer.

Soooo forcing EVERYONE who does attend, into the crowed bars is better than allowing folks to disperse around the mall area and mill around outside is a better idea ?
