Opponents Of Minimum Wage Hike Pointing Out Repercussions

April 2nd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Democratically-controlled Maryland legislature just passed a minimum-wage increase to $15 per hour and while many advocates and workers are cheering, they may be overlooking some potential devastating job losses on the horizon.  Supporters of this bill reason that the lowest-wage workers will benefit from more money and spend more in the local economy. But opponents are quick to point out that those same minimum-wage workers and other workers will suffer when their paychecks get cut, they lose benefits like paid time off, or they receive pink slips. In addition, with a higher take home pay, Delegate Mike McKay says those families could lose access to important government safety net programs such as food stamps…

Isn’t the whole idea of food stamps and Social Service programs to assist you until you can get back on your feet? Which, along with other programs, is what the minimum wage hike will be helping with. So, according to McKay, families should be relying on government assistance, and not trying to better themselves. Smh.

      > The irony is amazing. Of course let us remember that Mr. McKay wanted the Register of Wills job because it paid more than delegates make. It is interesting how “conservatives” love government payouts when they are directed at them.

Min. wage was NEVER intended to be a living wage! It was made for kids getting out of school looking for a first job.

You couldn’t be more wrong! Standards Act (FLSA) in 1938. Congress enacted this legislation under its authority in Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution: “The Congress shall have power to . . . regulate commerce . . . among the several states.” FLSA was a comprehensive federal scheme which provided for minimum wages, overtime pay, record keeping requirements, and child labor regulations. The purpose of the minimum wage was to stabilize the post-depression economy and protect “all the workers in the labor force”.The minimum wage was designed to create a minimum standard of living to protect the health and well-being of employees. FLSA specifically provided for a minimum wage for full time and part time, public and private sector workers. Specifically, workers who are “engaged in” or “in the production of goods for” interstate (commerce between the states) and foreign commerce

      > Of course! As Chris Rock says, “Minimum wage means “if I could pay you any less, by law, I would!”

“Untrained, unskilled workers” still need to pay for the necessities the same as you do. Food, gas, rent, utilities, insurance, and so on. Keep in mind also that $15 per hour will be in effect in the year 2025 not tomorrow.
