School Board Clarifies Grade Transcript, Marking Period Information

December 11th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Board of Education has released the following statement to clarify information presented during this weeks meeting.

It has come to our attention that some individuals may have misunderstood the information presented at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday on the results of the grade transcripts for the first marking period.  The data DOES NOT reflect a percent for individual student failures for the first marking period, but only course failures at the three levels: elementary, middle, and high.  The grade transcripts for marking period 1 (MP1) were sorted to review the percent of course transcripts with an F grade for the first marking period.

At the high school level, there were over 15,000 course reports for the first marking period with a total course failure rate of 16% for all courses offered. At the middle school level, there were over 12,000 transcript records with a course failure rate of 14 % for all courses offered. At the elementary level, there were over 14,000 records with a course failure rate of 1% for all courses offered.  For example, one high school student could potentially fail seven courses for the first marking period.  All of these courses would then be reflected in the course rate failure percentage for high school.

I hope this helps provide a bit of clarification regarding this instructional update.
