Second Water Main Break Causes Problems For City

For the second time in a month, a major water main break in the area of Bedford Street has caused problems fr the city. Portions of Bedford Street, Independence Street and Henderson Avenue were closed late Monday afternoon shortly after the break of a 24-inch main sent water rushing through the area and flooding structures in the process. Water service to a segment of North End was interrupted and higher elevations throughout the city experienced decreased water pressure. Water covered parts of Bedford Street and was flowing to Frederick Street as well. The Cumberland Fire Department, Cumberland Police and city water department were working at the scene late Monday. Crews were expected to remain there throughout the night. The break happened about 100 feet from the one that occurrred on July 6, which flooded structures including the Adams Family Funeral Home and caused more that $300,000 damage.
