Some Maryland lawmakers call for 24/7 protection of controversial statues

June 27th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

In recent days, controversial statues across the D.C. area have been vandalized and some pulled down by those who disagree with the notion of honoring a historical figure with ties to slavery or persecution. Now, some Maryland lawmakers are asking the governor to protect vulnerable statues in the state. WTOP reports Republican state Del. Nino Mangione stood in front of a statue of Christoper Columbus in his constituency of Baltimore City on Friday, calling on Gov. Larry Hogan and Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young to protect the statues’ “iconic status.”

“If you don’t like or appreciate Christopher Columbus, don’t visit this statue. Stay the hell away from it,” he said at a press conference.

Mangione joined Republican state Del. Kathy Szeliga, who represents Baltimore and Harford counties, in asking Hogan for round-the-clock protection for the historical statues they say are under threat of being vandalized or destroyed.

Read about white supremacist Republicans in the “Free State” wanting to honor reminders of racism! Move them to a museum where they belong instead of wasting money to protect them.

If you think Christopher Columbus was a racist, you are entitled to your opinion. If his statue is to be taken down it should be decidedly done in a legal manner. What gives certain people the right to destroy property because they don’t like it. I will give you credit at least you are not advocating the destruction of them by a mob of Godless anarchist. There are laws in this country, the laws that let people express their opinions the same laws that say you can’t destroy something that isn’t yours. A country without order turns into chaos. A prefect example is Seattle. A country ruled by mobs is great if it happens to be your mob, but when a stronger mob takes over then you will want protection for your group. Reading over this I used the word “you” a lot. I did not mean you personally, Goose, I didn’t see that in your post. If illegal destruction of property is OK with you then I do mean you, if you don’t please don’t take it personally.

      > Not an opinion, but a FACT, which you’d know if you ever picked up a history book. “Forced into slavery
In the places that Columbus landed, natives were forced into slavery and punished with flogging, loss of limb or death if they did not perform to such expectations as collecting enough gold each day from the mines. Columbus and his fellow travelers also brought with them diseases that ravaged the welcoming natives of the new land, estimated to have eventually killed 90% of them.

Columbus proved to be a greedy, cruel invader, a reckless adventurer and a fraud in that he never planted the flag of Spain in North America. Eventually, others brought word back to Europe of Columbus’ horrific treatment of the population amounting to genocide and in 1499 he was arrested, chained up and brought back to Spain and stripped of his royal titles. He died in 1506 at the age of 54.” https://www.minnpost.com/community-voices/2020/06/christopher-columbus-not-the-man-we-learned-about-as-schoolchildren/

Mark, Mark, Mark, history is a very complex thing and not as simple as you would like it to be. While you were reading your history books you must have dozed off after reading about his arrest. He and his brothers were imprisoned for six weeks until the king heard their case and released them and restored their wealth except for his governmental position. The king also financed a fourth voyage in 1502 a small fact you forgot to mention, if you knew, about Columbus. Was he a man of the year candidate? No but he was not Attila the Hun reincarnated either. Do I want to endorse the Spanish conquest of the New World? No! But they did nothing that any other invading army did in the last 5000 years, except the USA. We freed Europe, China, and the Philippines. You read history not to learn but to reinforce your already conceived notions. Your buddies BLM are duping people who have an arguable grievance into trying to tear the country apart. They are just like Marx and Lenin, tell people how terrible they have it and they can fix it. Only trouble is their cure is worse than the disease. You have a wonderful day now!!

Yea I guess there’s no “white supremacist Democrats”. The democrats are the ones who enslaved people. I wish you would quit whining about it & make some positive changes instead of blaming people that had nothing to do with slavery. It’s history pal & when you sanitize history it’s going to repeat itself. Think twice about what you want!

Let’s tear down all the Martin Luther King Jr. statues and rename all the boulevards named after him. He wasn’t the saint you all are misled to believe he was. He was a womanizer that cheated on his wife and he liked to solicit white prostitutes that he beat on during sex orgies… https://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-tapes-allege-mlk-watched-rape-2019-5
