Student discipline was an issue generating a great deal of discussion at this month’s regular public meeting of the Allegany County Board of Education.  An increase in aggressive and violent behavior among students was identified as a concern for teachers during a meeting in November with union representatives reporting that teachers have been assaulted and spat on. Those incidents, they say, are jeopardizing the safety of school staff and students.  Evan West, UniServ director for education associations in Allegany and Garrett counties, reported at the time that staff in 14 of the school system’s roughly two dozen buildings reported unsafe situations. With the board in the process of examining its student discipline policies- West says it’s imperative for members of the Allegany County Education Association to have significant input…

Brian, Very well said! I couldn’t agree with you more.

Studies that shown that bullying can lead to major school incidents when the school officials do not or can not take appropriate action.

There is no place of violence in our schools and I would like to think our children can be taught to respect those who are providing an education.

      > I am sure keeping bullies in school isn’t helping. When a bully doesn’t want to change then they were expelled 20 years ago and told to never return. Then we find a phony expert that said a bully who wasn’t going to change must stay in school to terrorize everyone including the lunch lady

Under comrade O’Malley, the laws were changed to permit more serious misbehavior by certain factions of the student body without punishment being imposed. We are just seeing the logical result of those changes. Annapolis will likely try to sort it with more extreme changes in the same direction.

But the schools want more money on tablets. Rid the troublesome students many of them don’t want to learn anything and forcing those students who don’t want to learn to stay in school till age 18 doesn’t work. Some want to make sure those who caused themselves to fail because they don’t like learning stay in till age 21. Making it harder for schools to expel troublesome students doesn’t work and telling them to get their GED isn’t working. The myth of expelled students running amok was proven as a myth. They are more trouble in school after 3 times being trouble makers.

The only way to rid some of these troublesome students is wait till they break the law and then they are remainded to the county Juvenile hall or county jail where if not released to parents are simply not seen again anyway. I blame the stupid state Government and its last Governor Liar O’Malley who said all kids need an education even though some just like being bullies and troublesome and won’t change.

Sentence structure and punctuation errors are rampant in the comments on this news article. Maybe student discipline is not the only problem with our school system.

        > Sadly but obviously very true. Even more damning of the local schools is the fact that the errors are much less rampant in comments written by folks who are not from around here, at least the older ones.

An electrician said to a teacher once that the difference between you and me is that at the end of the day you know if I have done my job, with you it takes years to know. I guess now we know what kind of job our schools have done (the system not the teachers). And THEY are suppose to be the SMART ones? The administrators not the teachers!!
