The Coughenour Conundrum

September 23rd, 2011 by WCBC Radio

The so-called “Coughenour conundrum” has left Cumberland city officials flustered and at least one city councilman is placing a part of the blame on the media. The issue at hand is what to do with the city woman who has essentially resided at the Heritage Parklet downtown for many years, now that the parklet has been converted into a visitors welcome area to greet tourists. Cathy Coughenour has been at odds with city officials, law enforcement, the downtown manager and the courts for many years over her right to choose to be “residence free” and the ability to occupy the parklet.  Councilman Nick Scarpelli, appearing on WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show” this week, said he believes part of the problem is that Ms Coughenour is seeking attention- and that the media has helped turn her into a local celebrity. Dealing with that celebrity status only creates more problems for those trying to resolve the matter…

I am so tired of hearing about Cathy Coughenour residing on public property. I think everytime she leaves her little nest everything should be immediately thrown away. Hopefully she would get the hint that she is not entitled and would move on. JMO

I’ve been told that she still goes back in there at night.

I dont understand why she can’t be forcibly removed from public property ,and made to stay away.I shouldn’t have to explain this to my kids everytime we go downtown.
