WV Teachers Union to Fight Back-to-School Directive in Court

January 14th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

One of West Virginia’s most powerful teachers unions announced Thursday it will file an injunction to block a state decision that would essentially eliminate remote learning during the pandemic.

A statement from the American Federation of Teachers-West Virginia said the filing would be against the state school board, the West Virginia Department of Education and several county boards of education “to protect the health and safety of school employees.”

The state board unanimously passed a motion Wednesday that would prevent county school systems from opting for remote learning after Jan. 19, overriding decisions that had already been made by several local boards. The motion would allow boards to select hybrid schedules with students in classrooms a few days a week and learning outside of class on other days.

High schools still would be shut down if the state’s map of coronavirus spread turns red.  However, that would not apply for schools at the PreK to 8th grade levels.
