The Allegany County Department of Emergency Services is issuing the following update regarding the ongoing flooding situation in the county:
Dam Conditions
• Savage River Dam is currently at Nonfailure Emergency Level 1. Water is flowing over the spillway; however, the dam remains intact and the structural integrity is stable.
• Piney Mountain Dam also remains intact with no structural concerns at this time.
• While both dams are holding, rivers and streams downstream are extremely high, and we continue to monitor them closely.
Weather and Water Levels
• Water levels have receded slightly, but a heavy band of rain is forecasted for this evening, which may result in rising water levels again.
• The Potomac River is expected to come out of its banks tonight or early tomorrow.
Response and Resources
• There are currently 21 boats and swiftwater rescue teams operating in the county, representing 24 agencies from 9 counties across Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
• These resources are strategically deployed throughout the county, and we are grateful for the strong partnerships and regional support received today.
Infrastructure Impacts
• Several county roads have been compromised due to flooding.
• County Public Works and the State Highway Administration (SHA) will assess and address road conditions as the waters recede.
Safety Concerns: Gas Leaks
• Floodwaters have caused washouts and gas line leaks in some areas.
• If you smell gas INSIDE your home, immediately contact 911. Use caution and avoid areas where the odor of gas is present.
Evacuations and Shelter
• A significant portion of Westernport has been evacuated.
• Emergency response crews are currently in rest status, preparing for the anticipated second wave of weather.
School Evacuations
• All students and staff from the three impacted schools have been evacuated.
• Those awaiting pickup are sheltering in place at Mountain Ridge High School, under supervision.
Ongoing Communications
• Additional updates and emergency alerts will be shared as new information becomes available.
• Residents are encouraged to follow:
