Animal Control Is Not Using Its Authority

September 24th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

South Cumberland resident Rich Everett told the Allegany County Commissioners of an ongoing dog control issue at the last meeting.  The most recent incident involving dogs running loose ended the life of Everett’s dog on his front porch, but he says Animal Control has done nothing.  Everett said a child could be the dogs’ next victim…

“And if they did that again—if my little niece is in the yard playin’ or on the porch she wouldn’t stand a chance.  It would be over that fast.”

Commissioner Bill Atkinson voiced frustration that Animal Control is not doing their job.  County Administrator Jason Bennett reminded the Commissioners of their investment in Animal Control and the Animal Shelter…

“You as the County Commissioners pay the Animal Shelter about $500,000 a year to carry out the duties of both the Animal Shelter and Animal Control.  So they have half a million reasons to take care of this.”
