Buckel Says Tech Tax Threatening Local Businesses

May 5th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

The State of Maryland’s new 3% tax on data and information services is hitting close to home, according to House Minority Leader Jason Buckel. At the Western Maryland Legislative Wrap-Up, Buckel said he has spoken with Jonathan Hutcherson of Provision IAM and the new tax has caused him to consider leaving the area for Pennsylvania…

“Because of the type of services that he offers to national and regional banks and credit unions and financial institutions – many are not Maryland customers – but now he would have to tack on this additional charge. And he’s basically told me either I eat the charge and so therefore you’re taking up most of my profit margin or else I pass it along to my customers and now I’m not competitive with people from other states doing the same thing.”
