Expanding Historic District Could Be Advantage

Currently for sale, the former Furlow’s Garage, which once also housed the Old German brewery, is not currently part of the city’s historic district, known as the Canal Place Preservation District. At the Cumberland mayor and council work session, there was discussion from Ruth Davis-Rogers about the advantage to possible buyers if the boundaries were extended to include the area where the warehouse is located…

“Historic preservation isn’t about making buildings pretty, or putting flowers and planters around. What it is is an economic driver because what it does is it offers tax credits. The last four years, we’ve had around ten million dollars in historic tax credits downtown.”
