July 28th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

On Sunday afternoon Maryland Governor, Wes Moore along with Congresswoman April McClain Delaney paid a visit to the community of Westernport. The meeting with local officials and residents took place at the Port West restaurant to discuss recovery efforts and plans to appeal the denial of federal recovery funds. WCBC News asked Governor Moore if his administration will allocate funding for the recovery effort while the government reviews the appeal?

"Yeah, we’re going to continue working very closely with our local leaders to make sure that we are going to get creative and ensure that our people are not being left behind right now. The thing that we know is that you can never make up for when the federal government or a federal administration just decides that we're all in our own, that there is no state that has the resources to make up for when the federal government should decide that they're going to leave people behind. We are going to do anything and everything in our power you know – working with our federal delegation, working with our local leadership to ensure that the people in Allegany and Garrett County know that in this state we believe in leaving on one behind."

Congresswoman, April McClain Delaney echoed the governor's commitment and added that she was impressed with the community's resilience…

"This Communities really have each other's back and I have been so impressed by you know the community I've seen here."

Westernport Mayor, Judy Hamilton said the message she wants residents to she will continue to fight for recovery funding…

"That we're going to continue to fight. We're going to do everything we can to secure the FEMA money so that we can fully recover in the town."
