Heritage Area Funding Bill Receives Veto

May 21st, 2025 by WCBC Radio

One of Governor Wes Moore’s vetoes last week is concerning to the 13 areas statewide that make up the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority.  Senate Bill 980, sponsored by Senator Paul Corderman, would have lifted caps on future funding for grants, based on the state’s financial viability.  DeDe Richie who runs the Passages of the Western Potomac Heritage Area said the veto came as a surprise…

“A little bit shocked to say the least that that was vetoed because there was no fiscal impact at all to the state of Maryland’s budget.”

According to Richie, the bill was designed to only have a benefit if the financial situation of the state improved…

“Right now, we get $6 million dollars statewide. So the legislation was for better times. So it’s not like we were asking for $12 million dollars right now or even ever. It was solely based on when times were better with the state budget.”
