Hit and Run on Route 51 Saturday

The Allegany County Sheriff's Office is requesting assistance from the public regarding a hit and run motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

 

During the early morning hours of Saturday October 18, 2025, a vehicle lost control on Route 51 and rolled over in the area of Lower Town Creek Road blocking the roadway. The driver was able to extract themselves from the vehicle but while he was standing in the roadway being assisted by other motorists, a light colored pickup truck drove by striking him causing serious physical injury. The light colored pickup truck then immediately turned around and fled south on Route 51. 

The injured driver was flown by Trooper 5 to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnston, PA for serious injuries and was in critical condition.

The Sheriff's Office Crash Team conducted an investigation of the scene and is requesting the public's assistance in identifying the suspect vehicle that committed the hit and run. Please contact the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office (301-777-1585) with any pertinent information that you may have regarding this incident.

The roadway was closed for approximately 2 hours.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by Maryland State Police Trooper 5, Allegany County Department of Emergency Services, Allegany County Ambulance, Oldtown Fire Department, District 16 Ambulance, Allegany County Fire Police, Cumberland City Fire Department, Lavale Rescue Squad, and the Maryland State Highway Administration.
