More Marylanders Letting Leaves Fall

November 3rd, 2025 by WCBC Radio

Marylanders are letting leaves lie instead of bagging them and throwing them away, a boon to local ecosystems, though many areas are still required to dispose of leaves. A National Wildlife Federation survey found about 20% of people don’t remove fallen leaves during autumn.  David Mizejewski, with the federation, says bagging leaves compromises decomposition and releases methane…

“Who would have thought that a simple choice of what to do with your leaves in the fall could actually have a tie to something as big and massive as global climate change?  If you throw away all those leaves, you are literally throwing away the entire next generation of pollinating moths, of fireflies – or maybe even queen bumblebees."
