New hunting laws being considered for West Virginia

March 24th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is considering the following changes to hunting regulations for the 2018-2019 seasons.

• Create a primitive weapons Jan. 10-13 hunt called Mountaineer Heritage Season during which deer and bear could be hunted with percussion or flintlock rifles without scopes or with long or recurve bows.

• Extend three-day antlerless deer hunts in October and December to four days by adding Sundays.

• Allow four days of bear gun hunting without the use of dogs Oct. 25-28 in some counties including Berkeley, Hampshire, Jefferson, Morgan and Preston.

• Create in some counties, including Hampshire, Hardy and the eastern portion of Mineral a new “earn-a-buck” rule that applies season-long, not to specific seasons such as bow or modern firearm.

The state’s natural resources commissioners will make decisions about these proposals in April.
