The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia has a new dashboard to track information on local policing. The state has seen an uptick in excessive use of force claims for those in custody or being placed in custody. Kyle Vass with the ACLU of West Virginia says people have a right to know if an officer in their community has a problematic history…
“That information is really important when it comes to trial or court proceedings, because if an officer has a problematic history and was fired from a previous department, you and/or your attorney need to be able to know why that officer was fired. We've already gotten feedback from some public defender offices that this tool has really changed the way that they're going about their cases, because they're now checking every single officer who is involved in a case.”
