The Allegany County Health Department reports that a stray cat found last week on Greene Street near the area known as the Dingle in Cumberland has tested positive for rabies.
Local health officials want to remind the public not to feed or approach stray or feral cats, dogs, or other animals, especially if they appear to be sick or injured. It is also important to keep household pets current on their rabies vaccination. Rabies is highly contagious and can be transmitted by the saliva of an infected animal.
