Friday’s Supreme Court Ruling that parents in Maryland could opt-out their children from school lessons that use LGTBQ+ themed books has had mixed reactions. The Maryland Freedom Caucus and House Republicans applauded the decision, saying parents are allowed to act in accordance with religious beliefs. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said he was profoundly disappointed in the decision and that such materials help create classrooms where children can thrive and be safe. The Montgomery County Education Association said the decision is reminiscent of a time when discrimination and intolerance were the norm.
