A joint investigation between the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Combined County Criminal Investigations Unit (C3I) continues after a three-alarm house fire claimed the life of a Corriganville woman Friday morning. At 11:53 a.m., Corriganville Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding departments responded to 11609 Proenty Road NW in Corriganville after a 911 caller reported a house fire with possible entrapment. Firefighters arrived within minutes and discovered heavy fire conditions throughout the two-story home. The three-alarm blaze brought dozens of firefighters to the scene and took nearly an hour to bring under control. After the fire was extinguished, firefighters discovered the body of an adult victim inside.
The victim has been preliminarily identified as a 69-year-old female occupant of the home. Her body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where she will be positively identified, and the cause of death will be determined. The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation. Upon firefighters’ arrival, no smoke alarms were reported sounding, and investigators found no evidence of smoke alarms within the home.
Deputy State Fire Marshals were assisted at the scene by the Maryland State Police Crime Scene Unit and K9 “Blondie,” which is standard operating procedure whenever a fatal fire occurs. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was treated and released on the scene. “You only have seconds to escape a fire,” said Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray. “Please, make sure you check your smoke alarms today. The sooner you hear an alarm, the sooner you can get out, and the better chance you and your family have to escape. It can be a matter of life or death for you and your loved ones.” A joint investigation between the police agency having jurisdiction and the Office of the State Fire Marshal is standard operating procedure whenever a fatal fire occurs.
