United Workers, a poor people’s human rights organization, will lead a rally walk on Saturday to Cumberland’s City Hall. The rally will highlight policies impacting families including cuts to Medicaid and SNAP programs. The event starts at 11:30am at the Community Café on North Centre Street, then moves to the Social Services Building before heading to City Hall. Janet Heavner tells WCBC that rally speakers are local citizens sharing how they’re trying to overcome poverty…
“So many people who are living in poverty struggle day to day and it’s not that they are lazy, which is a myth, or that they are just looking for a handout, which is a myth. They are struggling to keep their family fed and healthy and housed.”
