Van Hollen Co-Sponsors Bill To Remove Memorial

December 11th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

Senantor Chris Van Hollen has co-sponsored a bill that would remove a memorial plaque from Chevy Chase Circle in Montgomery County. Francis Newland developed the land and a plaque bears his name on a fountain there, but Senator Van Hollen, along with Congressman Jamie Raskin and other county residents would like the plaque removed because of Newland’s history of bigotry…

“He was a white supremacist and he worked actively to insure that the development he built was inaccessible to blacks, Jews, and working class families. So, this is a memorial plaque that was put there because he was the developer of this area but the development that he put together denied those groups access.”
