Winter Tips from City Police

December 27th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

As winter weather brings snow, ice, and freezing temperatures to the region, the Cumberland Police Department is reminding motorists to take extra precautions when traveling on winter roads.

Winter driving conditions can change quickly and increase the risk of crashes. Drivers are urged to slow down, plan ahead, and ensure their vehicles are prepared before heading out.

Winter Driving Safety Tips:

  • Slow down and increase following distance. Speed limits are based on dry roads; allow extra time to stop on snow- or ice-covered surfaces.
  • Wear seat belts at all times and ensure passengers are properly restrained.
  • Clear all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, headlights, taillights, and the roof of your vehicle before driving.
  • Avoid sudden movements. Brake, steer, and accelerate smoothly to maintain traction.
  • Be alert for black ice, especially on bridges, overpasses, and intersections.
  • Use headlights during snowfall or reduced visibility to help others see you.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, a flashlight, phone charger, water, and snacks.

Motorists are also encouraged to check weather conditions before traveling.
