In 1830, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s first steam engine raced a horse-drawn rail car to see which was fastest. Now in 2023, cyclists will have that same chance with a race against the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s Steam Engine 1309. The 3M Challenge – a timed challenge along 15 miles of the Great Allegheny Passage Trail – will pit biker against steam train from Cumberland to Frostburg on September 9th.
