In 1830, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s first steam engine raced a horse-drawn rail car to see which was fastest.  Now in 2023, cyclists will have that same chance with a race against the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s Steam Engine 1309.   The 3M Challenge – a timed challenge along 15 miles of the Great Allegheny Passage Trail – will pit biker against steam train from Cumberland to Frostburg on September 9th.  Larry Brock of Mountain Maryland Trails explained the bike versus steam train race works with teams or individuals…

The challenge benefits Mountain Maryland Trails – a non-profit that helps the county government with maintenance, development and promotion of the Maryland portion of the GAP trail.  The group takes on different projects the along the trail and helps visitors to the area…
