NAACP president criticizes mayor for Carver Board appointment process

Some heated exchanges headlined Tuesday’s meeting of the Cumberland Mayor and City Council as officers of the local branch of the NAACP made veiled accusations of racism when it comes to the planning for the renovation of the former Carver Community Center. The former Carver Board dissolved several years ago as the building sat vacant and deteriorated- however the city was requested to take the lead and a new board was recently appointed to help oversee a proposed renovation and rebirth of the aging facility. Last night’s dialogue began when NAACP President Tifani Fisher criticized Mayor Ray Morriss, suggesting his role as an elected official could conflict with his also serving as Carver Board president. She added that the NAACP was not given the opportunity to submit the name of an officer to be appointed to the Carver Board. Numerous attempts at communication about the status of the project, she says, have largely been ignored…

The mayor scoffed at those criticisms- and produced email responses from himself to the NAACP on the Carver project. Morriss said while he originally planned to suggest Fisher be appointed to the Carver Board, the idea did not sit well with some of the former board members…
