Allegany College of Maryland, Ukrainian Students Bridge the Gap:
Virtual Community Event Planned for Nov. 30

CUMBERLAND, Md. (Nov. 17, 2022) – Allegany College of Maryland students in Professor Diane McMahon’s Social Problems course are learning about Ukraine’s current political, social and economic situation in an incredibly impactful way – by speaking directly with Ukrainian students.

Community members are invited to attend an online “Bridging the Gap” conversation from 1-3 p.m. on Wed. Nov. 30, 2022, to learn about this unique partnership between ACM and Ukrainian students. Attendees will hear about students’ goals for life, work and education and their reflections on the strain of living in Ukraine since the Russian invasion. Advance registration is required at Survey and meeting links will be sent to attendees.

ACM students connected to the Ukrainian students through the event’s host, ENGin, a nonprofit organization that pairs with Ukrainian youth with volunteer English-speakers for free online conversation practice and cross-cultural connection. ENGin trained ACM students in advance of their conversations with their matched Ukrainian student partners. For the last 10 weeks students have hosted one-hour chats with their Ukrainian student partners to learn about their daily lives, work, education and cultural traditions.

The event offers the chance for community members to learn about volunteering through ENGin. More information is available at
