Arrest Made in Burglary

During the month of September, Deputies from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Offiice, acting on intelligence gathered from previous arrests, initiated an investigation into a conspiracy to commit burglary in the first degree.

In doing so, Deputies learned that a residence on Dogwood Hill Rd. in Barton was being targeted and as such conducted surveillance. During the early morning hours on September 12, Deputies witnessed a subject breaking into an unoccupied residence and as the suspect attempted to leave the area on foot, Deputies stopped and identified the suspect as Candice Marie Hockman (32 years old, Cumberland).

During a search incident to arrest, a sum of currency, along with other evidence related to the crime, was located and positively identified as belonging to the owners of the residence. Candice Hockman was charged with 1st degree burglary, Conspiracy to Commit 1st degree burgalry, 3rd degree burglary and theft under $100.00 Following an initial appearance in District Court, she was ordered held without bail.

On 3/12/14 at approximately 6:30 a.m., Deputies from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Riordan Rd. in Westernport for a reported burglary in progress. On arrival, investigation learned that the home owner was asleep when she woke to the sound of an intruder and observed light from a flashlight outside her bedroom door. She yelled at the subject who ran down stairs and out of the residence while the homeowner called 911. Deputies searched the residence and with the victim’s assistance learned that the suspect stole an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency from various locations in the residence.

With the assistance of a Mineral County Deputy and his K-9 a track was conducted which led Deputies to a residence on Kolberg Hill, a short distance from the crime scene. Ultimately, Deputies were able to identify the suspect as George Edward Mayhew II (32 years old, Westernport) and following a search of his person and a backpack, evidence related to the crime was recovered. MAYHEW was transported to C3I where investigators there assisted with additional follow up interviews and evidence processing. Ultimately, MAYHEW (digital image attached) was charged with 1st degree burglary, 3rd degree burglary, 4th degree burglary, theft under $1,000 and destruction of property under $1,000. Following an initial appearance in District Court, MAYHEW was ordered held on $7,500 and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center.
